Overview
Embark on a fabulous 5-day cycling tour through the heart of Vietnam’s famous Mekong Delta, the country’s largest “rice bowl.” This journey is designed to offer an immersive and accessible experience, exploring the region’s flat landscapes, intricate network of rivers, canals, and streams, and the unique floating life that defines it.
Beginning with a transfer from Saigon, you’ll quickly find yourself cycling on backroads through impressive vegetable farms, rubber plantations (if linked from other tours, but focus on what’s in this itinerary: vegetable farms, herb and coconut production areas, fields), and charming coastal villages (Day 1 description mentions cycling along the coast near Lagi, but the route outline focuses on My Tho/Ben Tre inwards, so emphasize farms/villages/rivers/canals). You’ll visit Buddhist pagodas and experience the mighty Mekong River by boat, crossing from My Tho to Ben Tre.
The tour takes you deeper into the delta, cycling through numerous canals and small rivers, passing through areas known for specific local products like herbs, coconuts, and dragon fruits. You’ll visit a Khmer Pagoda and museum, cycle along riverbanks observing the daily activities of locals on the water, from grocery boats to ferries. Highlights include boat trips to a busy floating market, exploring the serene Tra Su cajuput forest, visiting catfish farms and floating villages, and cycling through rural roads dotted with houses on stilts.
You’ll also gain insights into local history and culture by visiting a Hoa Hao Buddhism holy land area, exploring family incense workshops, visiting a historic French Monastery, and cycling to the former Viet Cong base at Xeo Quyt, including a sampan rowing boat trip into the forest. Enjoy plenty of opportunities to sample local foods, fruits, cakes, and candy, and witness beautiful sunsets along the biking paths and the Mekong River. This tour provides a fantastic opportunity to discover the authentic beauty and vibrant life of the Mekong Delta by bike and boat.
Experience the rhythm of Vietnamese rural life as you cycle past paddy fields and observe traditional farming techniques. The tour includes a well-deserved rest day in Nha Trang, allowing you to enjoy its beautiful beaches and explore surrounding islands with opportunities for snorkeling. Delve into history with a visit to the poignant My Lai memorial and explore traditional villages with their unique crafts. The journey culminates in the enchanting UNESCO World Heritage town of Hoi An, where you’ll explore its historic streets and the ancient Cham temples at My Son.
